Lose the Excuses to Lose that Weight

by: Janice Elizabeth Small

The opportunities to overeat are everywhere these days. Someone is always bringing cakes into work to celebrate their birthday, their promotion or their escape. Then there are all the family parties and other social occasions you enjoy (or have to attend). And these days even if you're not in company there's food to tempt you everywhere you go. Fast food places are sprouting up on every corner and supermarkets greet you with the smell of baking as you walk in the door. So it's undeniable that it's harder than ever to avoid tempting food.

Yet we find excuses to eat too much all too readily, saying "I really shouldn't" all the while grabbing the piece of chocolate cake on offer.

If you've ever been on a diet and not reached your target weight, you probably had excuse-making down to a fine art. After all there's a ready-made excuse for eating in any set of circumstances if you want to use it.

* Everyone else was having some

* It was there

* It looked so inviting

* It smelt so appetising

* I was fed up

* I needed a break

* I was bored

* I had a really bad day

* I need something with a cup of tea

* I always have popcorn at the movies

* It's Thanksgiving

* It's Easter

* I had candy left over from Halloween

* I'm on vacation

* It's Christmas

* It's my birthday

* It's your birthday

There are as many reasons to eat too much as there are calories in a double cheeseburger. The question is do you put your energy into finding excuses why you ate too much? Or do you concentrate all your efforts on losing weight?

It's really your decision.

There's no rule that's says you have to eat too much on ANY occasion. You can always choose to do something else: to eat just enough to satisfy and no more. You can decide to change your habits one day at a time until you no longer have the same psychological triggers to eat. And you can do this without being miserable and denying yourself everything.

It all comes down to how determined you are to reach your goal. If you're not really focused on achieving your target weight, the excuses will win out time after time.

But if you are ready this time to lose those pounds and keep them off, you'll find ways to get round the excuses most of the time rather than using them every time.

The difference between those people who lose weight and those who don't is simply how many excuses they make.

Are you ready to lose the excuses and lose the weight?

About The Author

Copyright 2005, Janice Elizabeth Small

Janice Elizabeth is a weight loss coach and author of "The Diet Exit Plan".
7 Simple Weight Loss Feasting Tips for the Holiday Season

by: Tracy Lee

Here comes Halloween... and the start of the "season of feasting" for a lot of folks around here.

It's become a sort of time-honored "tradition" for Americans to put on weight between Halloween and New Year's Day. Some would even say it's to be expected -- "After all, it's the holidays!", they say.

Now, I love the holidays. And I bet you do too. Who wouldn't love all the great treats and wonderful foods that just seem to spring up around us during the holiday season, right?

But don't you just hate it when you step on the scales after the holidays, and discover you've put on weight?

Fret not, for I'm here to show you how you can have fun during the holidays and enjoy all your favorite holiday treats, _without_ putting on any extra pounds.

Here are 7 Simple Weight Loss Feasting Tips for the Holiday Season...

1. Give yourself permission - Go ahead and eat anything you want during the holiday season. Halloween, Christmas, New Year's, it doesn't matter. Yes, you can have all your favorite foods. Isn't it refreshing to know that you don't have to abstain from your perennial favorites? You see, we tend to want more of what we cannot have. The more you try to stop yourself from eating something, the more you want to eat it. And when you do give in to the temptation, you'll tend to overeat. Here's the secret: It's not "all or nothing". Have anything you want, as long as you remember not to go overboard and consume too much.

2. Be clear of your goals - There must be a reason why you want to keep your weight down. If you don't already have a reason, now's the time to sit down and think of as many as possible. This step is critical if you want to be able to enjoy your holidays and maintain your weight throughout. You need to be crystal-clear about your "Why". Why do you want to lose weight? How would you feel if you end up putting on weight? Conversely, how would you feel if you can go through the holidays and yet maintain your current weight? Think about these questions carefully, and build up your arsenal of "reasons why". The next time you are tempted to overeat, recall these reasons again and they'll help you to stay in control.

3. Have a little of everything - Remember how it's not "all or nothing"? The secret to enjoying all the great food without the subsequent guilt is to have a little of everything. Just remember to control your serving portion sizes. You have permission to eat all kinds of food, but this doesn't mean you can go out there and devour extra- large portions of everything with super-generous gravy toppings, ok?

4. Be careful of the little nibbles - Sometimes, it's not the big-time party or pig-out feasting session that causes you to gain weight. On the contrary, it's exactly the opposite -- it's the little candy and chocolate bar that you pick up to nibble on, everything time you open the fridge or walk past the office candy bowl. All these little snacks in between meal times can (and will!) add up to a lot of extra calories. This sneaky little problem is something that has caught many women off-guard. And now that you know this, it's easy to catch yourself in the act the next time it happens to you!

5. Be smart - They're certainly trying, but don't be fooled by the retailers and their fancy packaging and labels. Have you noticed a lot of the packaging now screams out phrases such "fewer calories", "low fat", "less sugar", "low carb" and etc? Whilst all these claims are true, it does NOT mean you can eat more and have bigger portions. Remember: "fewer/low/less" doesn't mean "Zero/None/Without". Also, it's pretty usual that when something comes with less of one thing, it has more of the other stuff e.g. lower carb, but more calories.

6. Use the healthier versions - Many of the sweets and treats offer you a choice of healthier versions. So when you can, please do opt for the low-calorie, reduced sugar, or lower fat varieties.

7. Choose the right chocolate - And if you must have chocolate, please go for dark chocolate and avoid the milk chocolate. By far, dark chocolate is the best choice as it has antioxidant properties that can protect the body from damaging oxidative stress. So there you have it, consuming a moderate amount of dark chocolates is actually healthy for you!

So, who says you can't have your cake and eat it too?

Copyright 2005 Tracy Lee

About The Author

Tracy Lee is the owner of the "Weight Loss for Women Over 40" site.
Character Building by Designing Parents

by: Jean Tracy. MSS

Think carefully about what your child needs when you teach right from wrong. Research reveals 92% of high school students say they are satisfied with their own ethics and character, yet 1/4 admit stealing within the past year. (Josephson Institute of Ethics)

You gave your child the gift of life. Give your child character too. The method below offers you a 3-D Character Building Activity.

I remember counseling with an overworked mom who gave very little time to her daughter. The police caught 10-year old Jessica shoplifting not once but twice. Children who steal at an early age may be filling a hole in their hearts - lack of time with their parents. Find out how Jessica's mom used the Character Building Activity below to stop Jessica from becoming a habitual shoplifter.

3-D Activity:

1.Discover - Jessica's mom questioned, listened well, and discovered how Jessica thought and felt. She learned that Jessica did have a hole in her heart.

2.Decide - Jessica's mom decided to help Jessica change her mind about stealing toys and candy to fill that hole.

3.Design -Jessica's mom designed a plan to fill her daughter's heart with a loving bond.

The Plan:

Jessica's mom taught Jessica how to make salads and start the dinner. When she came home from work, they continued making the meal together. While sharing this task, they chatted about their day. Jessica's mother gave Jessica more praise, hugs, and kisses. They also drank bedtime tea together. How could these changes solve Jessica's shoplifting problem?

The Change:

Jessica had felt cast aside, unimportant, and unloved before her mom took time with her. As her mom thought carefully about Jessica's needs and used the 3-D Activity, Jessica grew connected. When her mom took time to share, listen and do tasks together, Jessica's heart filled with a bonding love. When her mom sipped bedtime tea with her, Jessica stopped stealing candy and toys to make herself feel whole. Jessica's a teenager now, and to my knowledge, she hasn't stolen since.

The Nutshell:

To think carefully about what your child needs when you teach right from wrong:

Discover how your child thinks and feels.

Decide what thoughts and feelings need improvement.

Design a plan that helps your child grow.

Use this 3-D Character Building Activity often to insure your child becomes a person of character and not a disappointing statistic.

About The Author

Jean Tracy, MSS, "Granny Jean," invites you to sign up for her FREE Parenting Newsletter.
Design Tips for a Great Kids Birthday Cake

by: Stephen Houlihan

These days, you can probably buy just about any style of child?s birthday cake already made. But there is nothing like the sense of satisfaction from making that special cake just for your child ? after all, they have each birthday only once!

There?s also the benefit of being able to control what ingredients are actually used in making the cake. Apart from producing a healthier cake, you can also cater for any allergies that your child or his/her friends may have.

Once you have decided to make the cake yourself, here are some tips to help you:

1.	Don?t worry if you failed Art 101 dismally. Remember that kids don?t expect you to turn out a design worthy of da Vinci. Often they are more interested in the number (and color) of pieces of candy on top of the cake than the actual design itself.

2.	In selecting a design for the cake, there are two main options: a specific design (such as a favorite character from a TV program), or a more generic theme (such as a train or an animal). Whichever you choose, remember that it will be much easier if you only cut the cake to the basic shape you want, and use the icing to create the detail of the design. Trying to make the Eiffel Tower out of cut pieces of sponge cake is a definite no-no!

3.	The actual cake recipe should be kept simple, such as a basic sponge cake. Remember, the icing and candy decorations will give the cake plenty of flavor, and a plain cake recipe will appeal to a wider range of kids? tastes.

4.	Be especially careful to cater for any allergies. Even if you are not aware of any allergies amongst the party attendees, it is best to avoid using any products containing nuts. Read the packages of the cake ingredients carefully.

5.	It is best to make the cake the day before the party. Apart from making the day of the party less stressful, you will find that the cake will be easier to cut. If the cake is too fresh, crumbs tend to stick to the icing and can make the cut pieces look pretty messy.

6.	When choosing the icing, think about how messy it will be to eat ? your friends won?t be too pleased with you if their kids end up with permanently-stained clothes from your brightly-colored strawberry icing!

7.	When actually making the icing, you may have to tweak the recipe to allow for the weather. For hot climates, you may have to add more icing powder/sugar to thicken it up; for cold days, you don?t want the icing to set as hard as rock.

8.	If you are going to use an icing decorating bag and tips to draw your design on the cake, have a practice first on a plate. You?ll surprise yourself with what you can do!

9.	If you are totally artistically challenged, there are many companies who supply ready-made decorations that you can use on the cake. You can even buy a lot of these over the internet, and you can find a list of some major suppliers at www.cakemagician.com/suppliers.htm.

Finally, remember to HAVE FUN when you make the cake! It may seem quite a lot of effort, but the happy smile on your child?s face when they see the cake will reward you immensely.

About The Author

Stephen Houlihan is a father of three children, for whom he has made many cakes over the years. With just a little thought and creativity, you should be able to come up with several more tips yourself.

1. Always use a list when you shop, and stick to it. Almost any other food item you put in the buggy will be something that does NOT fit in to your weight loss plan.

2. Plan ahead. Decide what your meals are going to be, and what ingredients you will need. Include portion sizes in this planning. If you just buy a pack of steaks, you will probably cook all those steaks at once and there is a chance they may be eaten all at once. Planning your meals will help you prepare your shopping list. Plan also for meals such as lunches you carry to work.

3. Take someone with you who you can trust to be on your side. By "on your side", I mean, of course, someone who understands and supports your weight loss goals. While this person should be aware of what you are trying to accomplish, YOU must understand that they ARE trying to help you, and YOU must give them permission to express their honest thoughts about purchases you are making...especially if you are deviating from your list.

4. Have this trusted friend or family member HELP you draw up your shopping list.

5. Always eat before shopping. It is a fact that shopping when hungry increases your tendency to put extra items in your shopping cart.

6. Learn to read the labels. Almost every food you buy has a label outlining nutritional content and levels. Knowledge of nutritional needs is important, but does not need to be daunting. Basic information is easy to obtain.

7. Avoid convenience foods. Most have additional calories, fats, or carbohydrates. Although they may taste great, this is often a direct result of those very attributes.

8. Plan PREPARED meals. Cook from scratch. Not only will you probably enjoy the meals more, but having to prepare a meal helps prevent you from indulging yourself with a quick and easy snack or meal.

9. Avoid buying "empty" foods. These are foods such as chips, cookies, or candy. An apple may have as many calories as a piece of candy, but it contains a much higher level of nutrition, and provides factors such as fiber, for example.

10. Buy foods you really like. Eating in a healthy manner does NOT have to be a boring or unrewarding experience. Types of meals enjoyed in Japan, for example, can be tasty and a different and inviting experience, but they can also be very good for you. Again, be aware of portion sizes. Just because it is "good for you" doesn't mean you ought to go back for seconds or thirds.

There you are, 10 hints for shopping for weight loss. Since portion sizes was mentioned twice, let me leave you with this thought. Most Americans eat portions much larger than recommended sizes. A discussion of portion size is more than can be incorporated into this small article. However, people in France tend to eat very rich foods yet do not have the obesity problems found in America. People in Japan who eat a traditional Japanese diet tend not to have an obesity problem such as is found in America. As diverse as these two cultures and their diet are, a common factor is portion size. They typically eat much smaller portions than Americans.

Copyright 2006 Donovan Baldwin

About The Author

Donovan Baldwin's interest in fitness and health began in 1970 when he first read Dr. Kenneth Cooper's "Aerobics".
12 Commandments for Parents

by: Annette Lucas

An important factor in a child's education is the parents'
expertise for this "job". No one is born holding all the
knowledge, but we can learn and understand some things from
books or advice from qualified persons.

Among the commandments a parent should strictly follow are
the following:

1. Do not underestimate your child - he can understand more
than you think he does and if you make him believe you
think poorly of him this might affect his development.

2. Don't use threat - a child loves a challenge and once
threatened he might probably go on and do what he wasn't
suppose to just to see if he can escape the punishment.

3. Do not bribe your child - if you are trying to get him
to learn (work, be quiet, etc.) for money (candy, tv time,
etc.) he will fail to understand the importance of
learning, all he will get from this is the importance of
money.

4. Do not make a small child promise something - small
children can't understand the concept of promises so don't
force them to lie and then punish them because they did.

5. Do not keep them on a short leash - to grow up normally
children need some space, some freedom and room to make
mistakes. Some of the biggest lessons we learn are from
the mistakes we've made in the past.

6. Do not use big words or too many words when you are
talking to your child - keep your ideas simple and concise
so he can understand every thing you have to say.

7. Do not expect immediate and blind obedience - it is not
recommended, a child needs to learn to think on his own not
to follow orders.

8. Do not indulge him too much - he needs to experience the
feelings of self-confidence and self-respect the rewards of
a "job well done" offer.

9. Do not compromise when it comes to the rules of a game -
the trick for a game to become educational is to have its
initial rules respected.

10. Don't impose rules that don't go with the age of your
child.

11. Do not try to inflict guilt - guilt is not an
appropriate feeling for children, especially if they are
little.

12. Don't give your child orders that you don't take
seriously - your child will try to please you and giving
him an order is drastic, and it becomes cruel if that order
is a joke.

All these "commandments" are addressed first to the parent.
But they are to be referred to by teachers and educators as
well. Along with the parents, they will instill an attitude
and strategy for the education and growth of the child, so
that they can give him all the things he needs to properly
develop emotional and physically.

About The Author

Annette Lucas is a stay at home mom who has quit her
factory job and will never look back.
4 Fun And Easy To Make Homemade Christmas Decorations

by: Rosie Fletcher

Homemade Christmas decorations are some of the most unique. They are also a lot of fun because you can enjoy them with your family. Below are 4 fun and easy to make homemade Christmas decorations:

Popcorn Stringing

If you like strung popcorn, it?s really simple to make. Start with a big bowl of popcorn (unbuttered, of course) and string it piece by piece using a standard sewing needle and thread. Make sure there?s plenty of popcorn because, if you?re stringing it for garland, you?re going to need a lot.

Cranberry Stringing

Much like the popcorn stringing method, many people used to string cranberries using a standard needle and thread. Again, make sure there?s plenty to go around if you?re going to use it as garland. Most importantly, and I know it?s tempting, don?t eat all the decorations. Save some for the Christmas tree.

Paper Chains

One of the greatest memories of decorating for Christmas, as a child, has to be the traditional paper chains. Using green and red construction paper, cut horizontal strips of each color. Fold them into a circle and seal with tape. Scotch tape is recommended and, if you use this when your child is young, the smell will always remind them of Christmas. It will likely become "Christmas tape" to them. Once you have a complete circle, take another strip in an alternating color and run it through the first circle. Next, fold it around and seal with tape. Complete this step until you have a big strand of paper garland in red and green. You and your child will enjoy doing this together and it will create wonderful memories for you both.

Lighted Wreath

If you love the look of a lighted wreath, but don?t quite have a budget for one of the more expensive ones, consider another option. You can purchase a plain green wreath very inexpensively. A small strand of lights can cost anywhere from $1.00 to $3.00. But, put them together and you have the look of a professionally lighted Christmas wreath. For this project, you could use either clear or multi-colored Christmas lights. Simply take the plain green wreath and wrap the lights around in a design similar to the stripes on a candy cane. Once you?ve gone all the way around, tuck the last light into the green of the wreath. Make sure that you place it near an electric outlet because there won?t be a lot of extra cord. Now that you?re ready, plug it in and see your very own design. A red bow is a nice touch, but not necessary. As people drive by, they will see a beautifully lit wreath in your window and they will have no idea that you saved a few bucks by wrapping the lights yourself.

About The Author

Rosie Fletcher

For more great Christmas craft related resources check out http://crafts.christmashub.com and http://stockings.christmashub.com
